PathPoint

PathPoint: on-site maps and queue management for the sites consumer maps can’t see

A haulage logistics and site management platform that gives truck drivers a route to the site and a digital map of the site’s gates, pathways and points of interest.

Devika took PathPoint from idea to a working MVP: a driver mobile app for iOS and Android, a web portal for site managers and transport companies, and an admin portal for the PathPoint team, all running on AWS.

Client overview

PathPoint is a haulage logistics and site management platform for the places consumer maps don’t cover: construction sites, container yards and grain receival points. It gives truck drivers a route to the site and a digital map of the site’s gates, pathways and points of interest, and gives site operators a live view of approaching vehicles, control of the queue and an auditable record of every arrival and departure.

The idea came from how heavy vehicle traffic is still managed while the rest of logistics has moved on: honour-system queues, PDF site plans emailed to drivers and trucks idling on local streets. Customer research pointed to three segments (long-haul freight, container yards and grain) and to a further insight: large operators would pay for accurate entry and exit timestamps, because that data underpins how they verify driver pay.

PathPoint engaged Devika to take that research to a working product, starting with a Proof of Concept to define the MVP scope and the MVP build.

The Solution

Devika built PathPoint as a cloud-native platform: a React Native driver app for iOS and Android, a web portal for site managers and transport companies, and an admin portal for the PathPoint team. It runs on AWS infrastructure, giving PathPoint security, scalability and low operating costs from the first release.

Key MVP capabilities

  • Digital site maps: the PathPoint team turns a customer’s site plan into a digital map with entries, exits, pathways and points of interest.
  • Site maps and arrival alerts: drivers get the route to their entry point (live directions open in Apple Maps or Google Maps) and the site’s own map on arrival, with geofence alerts as they draw near.
  • Queue management: each entry point has its own queue, run as booked time slots or first in, first out, and managers can reorder trucks as needed.
  • Driver app: drivers see their trips, route and site map, get alerts as they approach the site and upload dockets or receipts at any point.
  • Offline ready: site maps and trip data are stored on the phone, so drivers keep working where coverage drops.
  • Activity trail: every trip and job is recorded with timestamps, giving site operators an auditable record of arrivals and departures.

Location tracking runs only once a driver starts a trip, a deliberate decision that respects driver privacy and reflects transport company feedback against always-on tracking.

What convinced you this was a problem worth building for?

The problem was identified after I cited the current archaic framework for navigation and queuing used by a transport company when accessing a retail distribution centre. I was then able to assess and understand the size of the market opportunity and the benefits PathPoint could bring once rolled out to sites across Australia.

What did you need from a development partner to turn that conviction into a product you’d put your name and money behind?

The key need from a development partner for us was reliability in delivering the project features promptly and a platform which could be designed with commercialisation in mind.

What did Devika do during the planning and build that gave you confidence the product was going to land with the people it was built for?

Devika presented a technical roadmap and organised fortnightly sprints to update on development progress. The added benefit which gave me conviction to invest in developing PathPoint was Devika's involvement in understanding the product journey and assisting from a technical standpoint with any presentations or demonstrations we were conducting.

Long form
Where did they push back or steer you in a direction you hadn’t planned?

There was a constant check-in by the Devika team on avoiding over-engineering or complicating the solution and steering in the direction to answering the key problem statements. This allowed a more clear and concise approach which in turn gave us solution we could confidently present to customers and partners.

Built with AWS

PathPoint is built on AWS architecture, which scales automatically as new sites and fleets come on board, and inherits AWS security controls from day one, which matters for a platform holding site access and vehicle movement records. Google Maps Platform provides the underlying map tiles and address lookup, with PathPoint’s own site overlays, pathways and points of interest drawn on top.
