App Development Team Roles & How They Work Together
Discover the key app development roles needed to build a robust tech product. Learn how expert teams streamline the process for businesses.

You may not be aware of just how much structure and planning goes into app development roles when brining applications to life. Building a robust tech application requires a talented and well-rounded team that works together efficiently. Devika has spent 9 years and trial and error on over 100 app builds to perfect our project roles and process. If you’re interested in hiring your own team, or simply want insight into how Devika operates, read on!
Team Roles & Project Stages
Whilst all members of an app development project team work together, particular roles have a greater focus on different stages. The below diagram summarises this.

Product Owner (PO) – Critical App Development Role
Key Responsibilities:
- The (PO) is your first point of contact, working closely with clients to understand their vision.
- They make key decisions on features, budgets, and timelines, ensuring the product is ready within 3-5 months.
- Collaborates with the UX/UI designer and Solutions Architect to balance business needs with technical feasibility.
Essential Skills for Success:
- Big Picture Thinking: Balances user needs, business goals, and technical feasibility.
- Jack of All Trades: Competent in software development, design, and business models. Strong communication, professionalism, patience and empathy are key.
- Leadership: Guides clients and internal teams, keeping everyone aligned and on track. Fosters collaboration and provides support for their team.
The OP’s core role is during the first phase of the project: the planning and design phase. During this phase they work closely with the UX/UI Designer and solutions architect to craft a robust product design and technical specification.
UX/UI Designer
Key Responsibilities:
- The UX/UI designer takes the initial requirements and translates it into a user-friendly interface.
- They ensure a seamless user experience, balancing aesthetics and functionality.
- Works closely with the PO and Solutions Architect to ensure design feasibility.
Essential Skills for Success:
- UI + Graphic Design: Skilled in tools like Figma, ensuring visually appealing designs that align with business goals.
- UX Design: Creates seamless user flows, ensuring a frictionless experience. They must have a basic understanding of software development to implement feedback from developers.
- Teamwork: Collaborates with the entire team, from clients to developers, refining designs through feedback loops.
- They blend creativity with strategy and have strong attention to detail, ensuring UI designs are consistent and polished.
The UX/UI designer takes input from the PO and Solutions Architect to create intuitive, user-friendly designs. They work closely with developers to ensure designs are technically feasible and user-centric.
Solutions Architect (SA) – Technical App Development Role
Key Responsibilities:
- The SA is responsible for the technical foundation of the product, ensuring it’s scalable and feasible.
- They collaborate with the PO, designers, and developers to create a solid technical structure.
- Utilises cutting-edge technology and Devika’s Baseline tech stack to minimise tech debt.
Essential Skills for Success:
- Software Engineer: Expertise in AWS services, serverless frameworks like Baseline, and technical design.
- Adaptability: Adapts to evolving requirements and emerging technologies. Ensuring the product stays ahead of the curve
- Collaboration: Works closely with developers, designers, and managers to translate ideas into a solid technical foundation.
The SA works with the PO to ensure that the product’s technical foundation aligns with the vision. They then guide developers in implementing the architecture and refining it as needed.
Delivery Manager (DM)
Key Responsibilities:
- The DM is the key point of contact once we move into the project phase. They manage communication between the client and software developers, ensuring both sides get the information they need in a suitable format.
- They act as the main communication link between the client and the development team.
- At the end of each sprint, the DM shares completed work with the client for feedback.
Essential Skills for Success:
- Clear Communication: The DM must adapt their communication style to suit different stakeholders, ensuring developers get technical precision, clients get clarity, and the entire team stays aligned.
- Prioritisation: Ensures tasks are tackled in the right order to meet milestones and deadlines
- Software Development: Understands software development processes to accurately manage the team.
The DM takes input from the PO, UX/UI designer, and Solutions Architects to prioritise tasks in each sprint. They then manage communication with clients and ensure the team stays aligned with the project goals.
Software Developer – Core App Development Role
Key Responsibilities:
- The developer builds the application based on the technical specifications provided by the Solutions Architect and DM.
- Works in agile sprints, focusing on a set of tasks during each sprint.
- All Devika app development roles, other than UI/UX designers are ‘fullstack,’ meaning one software developer can build an entire application. This removes the need for multiple dev resources.
- A software developer will work on a project for 3-5 months and gets to know the client and their users well during this phase.
Essential Skills for Success:
- Problem Solving: Breaks down complex problems into manageable solutions.
- Attention to Detail: A single line of code can make or break a product. Precision is everything.
- Collaboration: Works closely with designers, DMs, and architects to bring the best possible product to life.
Developers collaborate with the Solutions Architect to ensure the technical structure is solid and with the UX/UI designer to refine the user experience. They provide regular updates to the DM and implement feedback from clients, ensuring the product meets expectations.
Hiring all of these roles can be costly for startups and non-technical businesses. That’s where Devika comes in. Instead of hiring a full team, you can access our expertise and resources as needed, only paying for what you need. We’re here to help you build a robust tech application, without the hefty cost of a filling out each of these app development roles in house.
